The Mrigadayavan Teakwood Palace

This all teak summer palace was built in 1923 by HM King Rama VI. The actual name in Thai is very difficult to transliterate into English. There are several different English spellings used for this teakwood palace.

This elegant teakwood palace is actually on Cha-Am beach in the compound of the Rama VI training camp. The palace is built in a traditional Thai house style which is elevated off the ground to enable more air flow to aid in cooling the living quarters. It was not only a place for the royal family to live in the summer, it is also an example of the artistic talents of HM King Vajiravudh (Rama VI).

Teakwood Palace

Mrigadayavan Teakwood Palace was abandoned from the end of HM King Rama VI's reign until 1965 when Thailand's current monarch, HM King Bhumibol, gave permission for the area to be developed into a training camp for air force troops. Eventually a foundaton was established to oversee the restoration of the teakwood palace which was later opened for viewing to the public.

Today this magnificent golden teakwood palace has been restored and is a popular attraction for Thai and foreign visitors alike. The palace is open for viewing everyday except Wednesday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Admission is 30 baht for adults and 15 baht for children under 15. Shoes cannot be worn inside the palace.
