Getting Around Hua HinThe easiest way of getting around Hua Hin is on foot. Believe it or not, it is possible to walk to many of the places of interest in Hua Hin. The town center is fairly small and it holds a majority of the restaurants, shopping areas and hotels on the main beach. If you and your family enjoy walking, then stay in a Hua Hin city hotel and get around Hua Hin on foot. Samlors, meaning three wheels, are an old fashioned form of transportation in Thailand, but they are still in use in many cities outside of Bangkok. Hua Hin is no exception to that rule. Samlors are not very useful for transporting your family. They can barely hold two adults in the narrow bench seat. Of course if you would like to know what it feels like to be transported by samlor, you can hire more than one vehicle. Most of the samlor drivers hang out near the main entrance to Hua Hin beach or at the Hua Hin train station. The drivers are usually older men as the younger taxi drivers like vehicles with engines. One of the more fun ways of getting around Hua Hin is by tuk tuk. They are everywhere in the main part of town and many of them have two bench seats which should be enough room for most families. Always negotiate fares before hopping on the tuk tuk. Then hang on and enjoy the ride. Although tuk tuks do not go very fast, it can feel quite speedy in an open air vehicle. For trips north to Cha Am beach or south to Takiab beach, songthaews are a good choice for getting around Hua Hin. Songthaews (pick-up trucks with two bench seats in the back) are not fast, but they are very inexpensive. They generally run up and down the main road similar to a public bus. It is sometimes possible to rent songthaews for the day, just for your family. However, expect to pay much higher rates for private rentals. Motorcycle taxis are a good way of getting around Hua Hin for one person. They are not very practical for families, but if you need to make a quick trip by yourself don't hesitate to use a motorcycle taxi. Unfortunately there are not any metered taxis in Hua Hin. There are, however, plenty of drivers with cars that are willing to provide taxi service for your family to any place in or around Hua Hin. Private taxis are a good way for getting around Hua Hin and to make your own tour. Just let the driver know where you want to go for the day and he will be happy to take you there and back. Most of the private taxis can be found on the road to the main beach just past McDonalds restaurant. |
